Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

On July 5, 2011, in Google, SEO, by LuCuS

Google BotWhen I first converted my company’s website into my own personal blog (the site you see before you now), the original intent was to teach internet marketing and search engine optimization. Soon there after the site took a turn more toward my day job and passion, software development. However, this doesn’t mean that I’m not still available to help you with your IM and SEO questions. In fact, I want to take a minute to focus on just search engine optimization.

Flash SWF to HTML5 Converter

On June 30, 2011, in Google, Web Design, by LuCuS

Adobe Flash LogoI’m sure most of you have already heard by now that Google recently released a new product called “Swiffy”. For those of you that haven’t heard about it already, Swiffy is a free tool for converting Flash SWF files to HTML5. Although it’s still a little flaky, Swiffy still does a pretty decent job and will only improve with time. To use the tool, head over to http://swiffy.googlelabs.com/ and click the “Browse…” button to select a SWF file from your local file system. The tool will automagically convert your SWF file into HTML5 and compatible Javascript code. Swiffy currently supports a subset of SWF 8 and ActionScript 2.0, and the output works in all Webkit browsers such as Chrome and Mobile Safari. I think this is going to speed up HTML5 development which is a huge improvement for the overall web world. Go ahead and give it a try for yourself.

On June 29, 2011, in Google, Java, Javascript, PHP, Programming, Python, by LuCuS

UniversityIt doesn’t matter if you work for Microsoft, Apple, or any other Google competitor. You’ve gotta admire all that Google has given us. As the leader in technology and innovation, Google has given the world a lot of great stuff and most of which has been free. I’m sure you’re already aware of free Google products like GMail, Google Maps, Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, and Android. But, did you know that Google also provides free education courses for things like learning new programming languages, web programming, web security, algorithms, distributed systems, and several others? It’s true!

The Google Code University (http://code.google.com/intl/fr/edu/) provides several free training courses that teach you things from Python & PHP to database design. Heck, they even show you how to create a full-featured application to create digital greeting cards or eCards and store them in a database! (http://sites.google.com/site/webdevedu/labs-1/exercise-one). I’ve looked thru several of the free courses included HTML, CSS, and Javascript from the Ground Up and some of the Python, Javascript, Java, and C++ courses and even as a seasoned developer, I was extremely impressed with the quality and content that each of these courses offer.

If you’re interested in learning something new or even just refreshing your existing skills, I would highly recommend checking out the Google Code University. There’s a lot of really cool stuff in there and it’s all FREE!!!

Long Live Javascript!!!

On June 13, 2011, in Google, Javascript, Microsoft, by LuCuS

Javascript BubbleOver the last couple of days, I have been reading more and more about how Microsoft is planning to ditch their current Windows development tools such as .NET and Silverlight in favor of HTML5 and Javascript. Apparently, Microsoft is pushing for all Windows 8 development to be done using “our new developer platform” according to Microsoft Vice President Julie Larson-Green. As a huge fan of .NET, C# especially, I’m not sure how I feel about this. Don’t get me wrong. I also love Javascript and completely feel that HTML5 is a great step toward our whole web experience. But, I don’t agree that Microsoft should ditch some of the things that make Windows the viable operating system solution that it is today.
