Google TrendsLike all good marketing systems, Google also has a nice system that shows what searches are currently the most popular and how all searches trend over time. Google Trends provides you with a way to repeat any search and see when it is the most searched during a time frame as well as what regions, cities, and languages it’s the most popular in. Google Trends is a great tool for determining when you should focus more on certain keywords and what demographics will most likely be searching for those keywords.

Let’s take our friend Joe for example. Joe’s been working diligently for the last few years on a website for his bookstore. He’s been researching the best keywords to use for his website, but for some reason, certain keywords perform better at certain times of the year. Now, he knows when keywords that involve holidays are best to be used. But, what about a keyword like “bookstore”? Well, that’s where Google Trends comes into the picture. So, let’s see what Joe can do with it.

Joe heads over to http://www.google.com/trends and enters the keyword “bookstore” into the search box and clicks “Search Trends”. Already, Joe is provided with tons of great information. One of the best artifacts of information that Joe sees is a nice big chart that shows the last 7 years worth of searches for the term “bookstore”. From the chart, he can gather that the keyword “bookstore” is searched more in the fall than any other time of the year. This spike is probably introduced due to the fact that this is the time of the year that most kids start back to school.

This is great for Joe. He knows that more people will be searching for “bookstore” in the fall than any other time of the year. So, he wants to make sure that he focuses on “bookstore” at that time so that he can maximize his chances of traffic which will lead to a great chance of sells. But, Google Trends doesn’t only show you a nice looking chart. It also has other useful information.

Google Trends also includes the regions, cities, and languages that the keyword you selected is mostly searched. For example, when Joe searched for “bookstore”, he learned that the Philippines does more searches annually than any other region, including the United States. As for the United States, he learned that Seattle, WA residents search for “bookstore” more than any other city in the U.S. and that the Tagalog language speakers search for “bookstore” more than the English or Chinese.

What do the regions, cities, and languages provide Joe? They tell him that to increase his chances of sells, he needs to make sure that he is capable of selling his products over seas. He might even want to consider having a translated version of his website available for those that are not English speakers. By knowing what city searches for “bookstore” the most in the U.S., he might even consider placing real world advertisements in Seattle. For instance, he might want to have a television commercial aired in Seattle that promotes his bookstore and / or website. He might even want to have some billboards setup in Seattle with his website’s address on them. Since the majority of his U.S. traffic originates from Seattle, he’ll definitely want to target that area by getting his name out the that audience in any way he can.
