Yesterday I told you that I now have my all-in-one SEO & internet marketing toolkit completely integrated with Delicious. Well, now it’s time to explain what Delicious is and why it’s good for us. Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. In 2005, it was purchased by Yahoo! and by the end of 2008, it claimed more than 5.3 millions users and 180 million unique bookmarked URLs. Delicious works kind of like the bookmarks feature in your web browser. After installing the Delicious toolbar, you can surf the web just as you normally would. As you come across websites that you like, you can click the toolbar to add a bookmark to that site which gets stored on the Delicious network.
Delicious is really cool because if you’re anything like me, you probably filled up your web browser’s bookmarks with your favorite sites on the very first day. Plus, this allows you to get your favorite bookmarks back at any time and it doesn’t matter what computer you are on. All you have to do is visit your profile on the Delicious site and there are all of your nice, neat bookmarks, just waiting to be clicked. But, there’s an even cooler secret to Delicious. Not only are your bookmarks available for you, but they are available to everyone else that visits Delicious too; and that includes the search engines.
Since the majority of search engines’ algorithms include looking for backlinks to a website for better ranking, having your blog or website listed on Delicious is a huge plus for getting traffic.
There are a few ways to get your blog or website listed with Delicious. The first step, as always, includes registering with the site. Head over to http://www.delicious.com and click the “Join Now!” button in the upper-right corner. Registration is of course free and easy. Once you’ve registered with the site, it’s time to do some bookmarking. So, let’s get to it.
The first way you can bookmark your website is by logging into the Delicious site and clicking the “Save a new bookmark” link in the blue box in the upper-right corner of the page. Simply enter the URL for your website and click the yellow “Next” button. On the next page, you’ll want to entre a title, notes, and tags that help identify the page you’re bookmarking. Be sure to use keywords that are found on the page and are also good keywords you want people to find your site by searching for. After you’re done, simply click the yellow “Save” button and your bookmark is now registered with Delicious. Be sure to bookmark every article in your blog and every page on your site as this will help create links back to your site.
The next way you can bookmark your website is a little easier and a lot faster. It requires having the Delicious plugin for your web browser. To get the plugin, head over to http://www.delicious.com/help/tools and select the browser that you use. I use Firefox, so I’ll be clicking on the Firefox Bookmarks add-on link. Be sure to read the entire page as it explains how to use the plugin. However, if you want to dive right in, there is a link at the top and again at the bottom of the add-on page that says “Install Firefox Add-On”. Click that link and follow the instructions on the next page for installing the plugin. You will need to restart your browser after installing the plugin before you will be able to use it.
After you have restarted your browser, you will need to sign into Delicious by clicking “Tools” on the tool bar and scrolling down to & clicking on “Delicious Options”. Then, you will need to click the “Sign in” link on the “General” tab and log into the window that pops up. Once you’re signed in, you will see a message on the “Delicious Options” “General” tab that says “Signed in as *your name here* on Delicious”. If you see that message, you are good to go.
Go through every page on your website and every article on your blog and save a new bookmark by clicking the “Delicious” menu item and clicking “Save a new Bookmark…” A window will appear with the URL and title of the page you are currently on. All you have to do is enter some notes & tags and click the “Save” button. It’s that easy! However, if you have too many pages on your site or just don’t fill like doing this manual work, then be sure to grab a copy of my all-in-one SEO & internet marketing tool when it becomes available (which will be soon!). It will automagically submit all of your WordPress blog articles to your Delicious account for you.
Well, that should be enough for now. If you have any questions or comments, please post them in the comments section below. Also, if you have a website that you want promoted, feel free to leave your URL in the comments below and I’ll bookmark all of your site’s pages in my Delicious bookmarks too. That’ll add more backlinks to your site and the search engines will love it!
