One of the questions I’m asked most often about blogging is “how do I get the word out about my new posts?” Nothing can be more discouraging than writing an awesome blog post and having no one read it. But, that’s about to change. I’m going to show you a few tricks that you can do to get the word out about your new articles. In fact, if you’re a WordPress user, I’m even going to show you a way to get the word out automagically. Let’s begin…
The first thing you can do to get the word out that you’ve just posted a new article on your blog is by jumping on the social networking bandwagon. Make sure that you have at the very minimum a Facebook account and a Twitter account. Then, after you’ve published a new article on your blog, head over to your Facebook page and post an update letting people know that there is something new on your site. After that, log into your Twitter account and tweet that you’ve just posted something on your site that your followers can’t live without. I like to at least include the title of the article since I try to keep those as relevant to the article as possible.
When posting to Twitter, I would recommend that you use any of the free URL shortening services out there so that you can be sure to get your full URL in there and still have room to include some good text that pertains to the article you just posted. I have my own URL shortening website that I use to do this. In fact, I even have a WordPress plugin that I wrote that automagically shortens the URLs for any new articles I post. This saves me a lot of time and provides me with a ready to use shortened URL for tweeting. Be sure to checkout my article about creating your own URL shortening webservice by clicking here.
The second thing you can do to get the word out about your new blog entries is by simply telling people about them. Quite often, I will send out a mass text message to friends and family informing them about a new article I’ve recently posted somewhere. This is another great place to include your shortened URL since SMS also has a short character limit (160 characters). I also like to email friends and family about new articles, especially those that I know certain people would like to read. I even have several different email groups that I send emails to. For instance, I have an email group that only contains subscribers that are interested in making money online. So, when I post an article that shows how to make money online, I’ll send an email to that group letting them know.
The next thing you can do for getting the word out about your new blog articles is to submit them to any of the social bookmarking sites such as Delicious. For more information about Delicious, you should click here to checkout an article I wrote a while back. It does a decent job of explaining what Delicious is and how you can benefit from it. I’ve even gone so far as to include Delicious capabilities in my All-In-One SEO program. The program automatically checks my WordPress blog for new entries and auto submits new articles to Delicious. Some of my analytics systems such as Google Analytics indicates that I receive a pretty significant amount of traffic from Delicious. So, I like to make sure that any new articles get posted there to help generate more traffic.
The last thing I want to mention about promoting your new blog posts is something that is built right into WordPress. It’s called “Update Services”. The Update Services feature in WordPress automatically sends notifications to other sites whenever you post a new article. By default, WordPress only includes 1 URL in the Update Services list. To see that list, log into your WordPress admin console and go to Settings > Writing. Then, scroll to the bottom of that page and you’ll see a section for “Update Services”. There are plenty of sites out there that accept automatic notifications, or “pings” as they’re called. Here is the list that I use on this site:

Simply copy and paste each of those URLs into your Update Services list and press the “Save Changes” button. From now on, every time you publish a new article, WordPress will automatically notify each of those sites and you’ll see traffic pour in almost immediately. If you have your site monetized with something like Google AdSense, you’ll also want to keep an eye on those as well since more traffic means more money.
